{m}aganda magazine
{m}aganda magazine is a Pilipinx-American student-run literary publication at UC Berkeley.

Founded in 1989, {m}aganda has evolved from its beginnings as a bi-annual magazine and is now a diverse anthology of submitted work that is published once a year. In addition to the printed magazine, we curate year-round submissions from Pilipinx artists for digital publication on the {m}aganda blog. We serve as a vital forum for the presentation of diverse experiences and opinions through all platforms for creativity–including art, prose, poetry, film, music, journalism, music, dance, and more!

We record our lives as “cultural historians,” not forgetting that our forefathers and foremothers have blazed this path for us, making publications like {m}aganda possible. We come from a strong tradition of Pilipinx and Pilipinx American writers, a tradition which includes Dr. Jose Rizal, Paz Marquez Benitez, Estrella Alfon, Jose Garcia Villa, and Nick Joaquin among others. Because of them, and for the future, we proudly give our community {m}aganda.

Within the UC Berkeley community, we collaborate with other Pilipinx, art, and media organizations. Examples of this include our annual open mic nights, art exhibitions, and our virtual workshops with the organizations like Pilipinx Association for Health Careers (PAHC) organization on the impact of COVID-19 on our Pilipinx American community. With your support, we can continue this vital work by ensuring {m}aganda lives on in print as an artistic platform, which is even more vital during this COVID-19 pandemic. Each print of this year’s edition of {m}aganda will serve as a concrete totem, a testament to our community’s resilient creativity regardless of the circumstances. We’re grateful for your support and can’t wait to show you this year’s edition!
