Student Technology Equity Program (STEP) Fund
STEP was launched at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic to help students obtain free, long-term loans of critical technologies when classes shifted to remote learning. Since March 2020, STEP has provided over 5,000 students with essential hardware such as laptops, Wi-Fi hotspots, noise-cancelling headphones, microphones, webcams, and drawing tablets to ensure their successful academic engagement as a UC Berkeley student.
Your gift to STEP provides the support that STEP needs to carry out its mission. Gifts enable STEP to offset the cost of providing access and technology. For example:
- Compensating student employees for work to support the operations of STEP and providing them with a valuable student employment opportunity
- Equipping students with complete sets of peripheral hardware, including a drawing tablet, a webcam, noise-cancelling headphones, and an external microphone
- Allowing students without adequate Wi-Fi service in their home to receive a wireless hotspot and a service plan
- Providing a state-of-the-art, high-performance laptop for students in need.
