Your support for the Department of South and Southeast Asian Studies (SSEAS) helps fund a dynamic community of scholarship that includes language teaching, student scholarships, visiting scholars, and cultural studies.
Founded in 1973, SSEAS offers undergraduate and graduate instruction in the languages and cultures of South and Southeast Asia. Students explore the region’s rich cultural, social, and religious histories, as well as its living contemporary cultures. The curriculum covers modern cultural history, the classical literary canon, religions, folk and popular works, oral traditions and performance media, and modern literatures of the colonial and post-colonial periods. SSEAS also offers 14 languages — the most of any department at Berkeley.
SSEAS is the home of the Berkeley Center for the Study of Religion, the Institute for South Asian Studies, the Group in Buddhist Studies, and the Center for Southeast Asian Studies.
Your gift supports this rich community of diverse cultural openness and exchange on the Berkeley campus. Please give today — and thank you for supporting SSEAS!
