Young Workers Leadership Academy

The annual Young Worker Leadership Academy (YWLA) is a three-day youth leadership training program that teaches teams of high school students from all over the state about occupational safety and health.

The annual Young Worker Leadership Academy (YWLA) is a three-day youth leadership training program that teaches teams of high school students from all over the state about occupational safety and health. It also aims to develop their leadership skills so they can serve as resources to other youth now and to fellow workers in the future..

Six teams of four youth each plus their adult sponsor, youth mentors from previous years, and a variety of other community members attend each Academy. The first YWLA was held in 2005 with over 22 academies, and 128 teams of youth leaders have been trained.

The goals of the Academy are to:

● Teach about workplace health and safety;

● Brainstorm ways to promote healthy and safe workplaces and prevent workplace injuries;

● Develop specific action plans to promote young worker health and safety in their home communities;

● Afford the opportunity to learn about others’ perspectives, experiences and cultures and the type of health and safety challenges faced by working teens throughout the state.

Following the Academy, the teams return to their schools or community organizations to create campaigns and activities that are launched during Safe Jobs for Youth Month in May.

Your sponsorship of the Young Worker Leadership Academy would be very much appreciated!
