Engineering education redesigned.
The Fung Institute for Engineering Leadership was created in response to a turning point. As technology began reshaping every sector—at speed and at scale—it became clear that technical excellence alone was no longer enough. Engineers, and those working alongside them, needed to lead: across disciplines, systems, institutions, and real-world constraints.
Founded in 2010 by Berkeley alumnus and philanthropist Coleman Fung, the Institute pioneered a new model of engineering education, integrating rigorous technical training with leadership, innovation, and real-world problem solving. That innovation began at the graduate level with our top-ranked Master of Engineering program, expanded to undergraduates from all disciplines through the Fung Fellowship, and now extends to working professionals in essential public-serving sectors.
Today, the Fung Institute treats engineering leadership education as a public good, preparing leaders who can design solutions that are not only inventive but viable, ethical, and built to endure.
